And just like that, it’s the middle of July and two of our bigger shows are in the rear view mirror. Now we have a few ‘normal’ weeks in a row, first with the Great Lakes Super Sprints coming to town this weekend.
First up this time are a few announcements…
- The 4th Annual Merritt Showdown will take place on Wednesday, June 6, 2018
- Fan appreciation night including autographs, fireworks, and larger payout, will be a single day event, held on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 with no camping
- 30th Annual Ed VanDuinen WoodTic will push back one week again and change days as well, since tracks schedule against each other nowadays. The 2018 event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22, with Halloween as our theme
The Wood Tic all-in-all was pretty solid again this season! Thank you to everyone who joined us - racers, teams, fans, campers, officials, etc. Thursday’s WoodTic had 127 cars, including 40 Late Models! Shoutout to Brandon Thirlby, who had a stout run and finished second, knocking on the door for a win on Thursday night. Billy Moyer Jr. won the Diesel Freak 40 UMP Late Model race, Jacob Poel in the Summit Modified Tour event, Mike Vandermark Jr in his Factory Stock, and Ryan Hamm in the Four Cylinders.
Friday was a rough go for us fan-wise with the misty dark day, but the pits were again full with 173 signed in. The prelim events were all very entertaining and the post race party was strong as well. The pulled pork was good and the dancing was, interesting on the concourse at the bar. lol
Saturday, thank you so much to Dorene for putting together yet another excellent kids day set of games and prizes. With that, thank you very much to all the people who made cash or item donations towards the games. It is always such a treat to see all the smiling faces! Thanks to the Baldwins for really making that happen.
Saturday night was a solid, with lots of cars in pretty much every class. Extended features for all of our divisions and a few B features made for a nice full night of entertainment that most seemed to really enjoy. Congratulations to Dona Marcoullier, winner of the UMP Late Model feature, in what turned out to be a great 50-lap caution free race. Jacob Poel went back to Allstar Performance victory lane again, but didn’t have it so easy with strong runs from Joe Rokos, Chad Bauer, and David Mielke! UMP Mods also went caution free in a really entertaining race.
The B Modified feature was good, as four of the usual front-runners all chose to start at the tail of their feature. Cody Bauer managed to drive to the lead and get another victory. Johnny Roberts was a man on a mission this weekend, returning to the winners circle for the first time in awhile in his Lightning Sprint with 19 cars on hand for that division!
The Pro Stock race was definitely the most challenging of the night, with lots of cautions and aggressive driving. In the end TJ Erickson got the victory, over Nate Murphy and Don Erickson. Mike Vandermark, Rick Spencer, and Jim Miller Jr amongst others all put on a heck of a Factory Stock feature, with Vandermark claiming the checkered flag. Willard VanHaitsma had all he could handle in the Four Cylinder feature, fending off the likes of Danielle Robinson, Chad Tomczak, and Travis Skaggs. The double zero got another victory, and retains the point lead. Our Mini Wedge classes had Dylan Vermilyea, Zadin Buskerk, Keeton Cade, and Steven Niewenhuis all getting feature wins! Congratulations to everyone who got a checkered flag and participated with us this weekend.
As mentioned above, this week we welcome the Great Lakes Super Sprints, as they join our UMP Late Models and other weekly divisions for a good night of racing. We look forward to have you out with us at another event soon, and thank you again to everyone who made WoodTic a special event once again.
